Adding Charm to Our Kitchen - Before & During

When we built our house last year, none of the options the builder offered for finishing the island wrap and kitchen backsplash appealed to us.  We decided to just have them leave the drywall and we would decide the final look later and install it ourselves. I am so glad we did! 

The picture below was taken before closing.  The kitchen, living and dining are all open concept.  We have white cabinets & trim, neutral paint and light granite counters.  Out of view in the living room is a floor to ceiling stone fireplace with dark mantel and a dark oak entertainment center. There is also dark LVP throughout the entire home.  

With the kitchen being essentially shades of white and the living area heavy with wood & stone, the two areas were polar opposites and we needed to do something to make them more cohesive. 



We decided on stained oak beadboard for both the island and the backsplash.  My husband I purchased unfinished panels from Menards and cut them to size.





We dry fitted them to make sure our cuts were precise and then we numbered the backs of each piece prior to finishing. 



After applying a coat of Minwax Aged Barrel Oil Stain and top coating with three coats of Minwax Warm Satin Polyurethane, we used construction adhesive and a nail gun to install the panels.






Palmer was happy to supervise between naps.



You can already see the transformation taking place! It turned out so beautifully and really married the spaces together.

    I love bead board. It adds such charm. I think it is Palmer approved too! Looks great and I know you are pleased you waited on doing this. Janice

 Hi friends! It's been cold here in Kentucky and we even got a few inches of snow this morning. Winter has definitely shown up here and around the country! I actually enjoy cold weather and hunkering down in the house with warm sweaters, cozy  blankets and a steamy drink.  I have been working on a little kitchen refresh that I'm hoping to share in a few days. Cozy Winter Favorites: Wax Melts

Hi friends! I've been thinking about the things that make my house a home and give me all the cozy feels during the cold and sometimes dreary days of winter. I also thought it might be fun to do a little series of posts about them to share with you! Today let's visit one of all time favorite ways I like to cozy up my home, not just in the winter, but year around - wax melts!  There are so many things to like about wax melts, but my number one reason I'm a fan is no open flame! No danger of fire, no dirty soot. Don't get me wrong, I love a good candle (and do use them) but yikes, they sure burn dirty and make a mess when used day after day. 2024 Will Be Enough

 Hi y'all! Happy New Year to all of you!  I've been thinking a lot about the new year and all the usual resolutions and expectations we all tend to set for ourselves with a 365 day clean slate presented to us each January 1st.  As the Christmas season unfolded, I also have been thinking about the pressures and expectations we tend to put on ourselves to make the Christmas experience "perfect."   We craft, we decorate, we bake, we entertain, we buy and yet, it never seems enough. Social media has a lot to do with this feeling of not doing or being enough. I noticed in so  many blogs and vlogs this past season, where the creators would constantly  apologize that "I need to repaint this room, our Formica countertops need to be replaced, we ran out of time to install new floors, the curtains are all wrong" and on and on and on.
