What I'm Up To Today - Lamp Refresh

Hoping your Monday is off to a good start! 

It's a cool and drizzly morning in northern Kentucky, so I thought it might be a good time to work on a project I've been itching to do.

I have a pair of lamps that are sort of a faux brass finish. They are made of resin. I picked them up years ago for $6.99 each. They don't necessarily "go" with my style, but there is just something about them that keeps them hanging around in my decor. They definitely need a refresh and I think I can make them look better as well as helping them "fit in."

So here is where we are starting. This is what they look like with the light turned on.

This is a more accurate picture of the color. My primary colors in our house are green and copper. These lamps actually do have a hint of copper, but primarily they look more brass to me and just aren't living up to their potential in their current finish.

I've been wanting to bring more copper and rust hues into our great room space. These lamps seemed like a great candidate to do just that. So I gathered up Rub n Buf  in Spanish Copper and a bit of Apple Barrel craft paint in Chestnut. I like to use a cheap makeup brush to apply Rub n Buf. 

First step in the refresh was a very light and random coat of the Chestnut craft paint. I was not looking for complete coverage, just enough to tone down the brass but still allowing some of it to show through. This will give the final look a more layered, aged and authentic look. You can see the lamp on the right already looks more coppery with the paint layer.

After the paint dried, it was time to go to town with the Rub n Buf. Again, the lamp on the right has the beginnings of the Rub n Buf treatment. The Spanish Copper color gives the look of an aged penny. Once all of the Rub n Buf is applied, I'll let it dry and follow up with buffing using a soft cloth.
